A woman performing breathwork, with a hand on her chest, and candles around her.

There are moments when everything feels like too much.

Not in a dramatic way.

Not in a way that anyone else might notice.

Just… quietly heavy.

Your thoughts start stacking.

Your body feels tight without you realizing it.

Your breath gets a little shallow.

And suddenly, even small things feel harder than they should.

Nothing is necessarily wrong.

And yet… something doesn’t feel right.

You’re Not Meant to Hold Everything at Once

When overwhelm sets in, it often feels like you should be able to handle it.

Like, you just need to focus more.

Push through.

Figure it out.

But overwhelm isn’t a sign that you’re failing.

It’s a sign that something inside you has been holding too much, for too long, without space to release it.

Your mind is trying to process everything at once.

Your body is trying to keep up.

And neither of them has been given a place to rest.

What Overwhelm Really Is

Overwhelm isn’t just about having a lot to do.

It’s what happens when:

  • Too many thoughts are active at the same time

  • Too many feelings go unprocessed

  • There hasn’t been a pause in a while

It’s not a lack of strength.

It’s a lack of space.

And instead of trying to fix everything…

We begin by creating a little room to breathe.

1. Step Away From Input

When your mind feels full, the last thing it needs is more.

More scrolling.

More information.

More noise.

Gently step away.

Put your phone down.

Turn off the sound.

Let the world quiet for a moment.

Even a few minutes of silence can begin to soften what feels loud.

2. Come Back Into Your Body

When your thoughts are racing, your body is often trying to ground you.

Place one hand on your chest.

The other on your belly.

Close your eyes if you can.

And breathe.

Slowly.

Gently.

Feel your chest rise beneath your hand.

Feel your belly expand.

Let your body move without forcing it.

You don’t have to control your breath perfectly.

You just have to stay with it.

3. Soften Your Environment

Your surroundings matter more than you think.

If you can, dim the lights.

Or light a candle and let that be enough.

Notice how the glow moves across the wall.

How the room feels a little quieter, a little softer.

If there’s a scent you love, something warm, something comforting, let it fill the space gently.

These small shifts tell your body:

You’re safe. You can slow down.

4. Let Your Body Breathe

Sometimes, overwhelm isn’t just in your mind.

It’s in your body.

In tight clothing.

In tension you haven’t noticed.

In the way you’ve been holding yourself all day.

If you can, change into something soft.

Loose.

Flowing.

Comfortable.

Let your body expand.

Let it breathe fully.

Even this small act can begin to release what you’ve been holding.

5. Let Your Thoughts Land Somewhere

When everything is swirling, writing helps.

Not neatly.

Not perfectly.

Just honestly.

Open a page and let your thoughts come out exactly as they are.

You might hear the soft sound of your pen moving, steady, grounding, real.

You don’t need to organize anything.

You just need somewhere for it to go.

6. Engage Your Senses

When your mind feels overwhelmed, your senses can gently bring you back.

Hold something warm.

A cup of tea.

Something that grounds you.

Notice the warmth in your hands.

The steam rising softly.

The scent, subtle, comforting, familiar.

Take a slow sip.

Let yourself taste it.

This moment is small.

But it’s real.

And it’s enough to anchor you, even briefly.

7. Do Nothing (On Purpose)

This one can feel uncomfortable at first.

But it’s important.

Sit.

Not to fix anything.

Not to figure anything out.

Just sit.

Let your thoughts move without chasing them.

Let your body settle in its own time.

You are not falling behind by pausing.

You are allowing yourself to return.

You Don’t Have to Reset Perfectly

You don’t need to do all of these.

You don’t need to do them in order.

You don’t need to get it right.

Even one small shift:

One breath

One moment of quiet

One softened space

Can begin to change how you feel.

Closing Thought

You are not too much.

Your mind is not broken.

Your body is not working against you.

You have simply been holding more than you were meant to carry alone.

And you are allowed to set it down, even for a moment.

Even right now.
